Application Specialist, Cultural Producer, Machine Operator, Director of Education and Welfare, School Psychologist, Certification and Competency Trainer, Data Analyst, Nutritionist, and Marketing Coordinator. These are just a few examples of job titles in the public sector.

Did you know that various municipal organizations, such as municipalities, cities, educational institutions, municipally owned support service companies, and welfare regions, employ a vast number of professionals across different fields throughout Finland? Job opportunities are available from Hanko to Utsjoki.

While municipalities employ a large number of traditional education and early childhood professionals and welfare regions rely heavily on social and healthcare workers, these organizations also offer a wide range of positions in human resources, financial management, IT, communications, legal services, engineering, property management, as well as cultural and recreational services. Employees are also constantly sought for various development projects and initiatives. Welfare regions are also responsible for organizing emergency services.

Municipally owned support service companies include IT services, financial management services, and property, food, and cleaning services provided for municipalities. Additionally, there are municipally owned energy and water utilities, as well as regional development associations. Welfare regions are also served by companies specializing in healthcare services. Many educational institutions, such as vocational schools and universities of applied sciences, are municipally owned.

Public organizations as employers

Municipal organizations are generally stable and responsible employers that offer diverse and practical job opportunities for interns, summer workers, and permanent employees alike. Depending on the size of the employer, tasks can be highly independent or part of larger teams. Remote work opportunities are available in many roles, depending on the nature of the job.

Skill development and career advancement are supported, and employee well-being is taken care of comprehensively. Salaries are always based on a collective agreement (KVTES, OVTES, TS, LS, or SOTE agreement), but factors such as prior experience and job performance can influence pay levels. Municipal organizations and welfare regions also offer surprisingly diverse employee benefits.

Summer jobs, internships, and substitute positions also available

In addition to permanent roles, municipalities and welfare regions offer thousands of summer jobs and internships across Finland every year. Municipalities, in particular, provide a variety of summer jobs for people under 18, including outdoor area maintenance, museum and information services, summer customer service, content production, and assisting healthcare roles. Internships are also available not only in education, early childhood education, and healthcare but also in administrative and technical services. Most summer job and internship applications open between January and March.

Municipalities and welfare regions also have a continuous need for substitute workers, particularly in healthcare, nursing, education, early childhood education, and food and cleaning services. Some substitute roles are long-term positions, while others involve short-notice shift work. Employers have different practices for handling substitute recruitment, and the best way to get accurate information is to contact the recruiting employer directly.
