Finland needs a skilled workforce to enable businesses to thrive and to maintain the services of our welfare state. Labour shortages are already a real challenge in many sectors, and in the future labour immigration will become even more important for the functioning of the labour market.
The YTK is involved in the ” Immigration is National Defence “ campaign, launched this week, which aims to raise understanding of the importance of labour migration and bring facts to the debate. The campaign reminds us that without international talent, Finland will not remain competitive and our welfare state services will not last in the long term.
Why did YTK join the campaign?
The YTK has a diverse membership, and we already have many members who have moved to Finland for work. We serve all our members, both in terms of unemployment benefits and expert labour market information. We want to ensure that international workers also have access to information about Finnish working life and social security.
At the same time, we recognise that Finland’s workforce is ageing and the working age population is shrinking. Without immigration, our working age population is set to fall dramatically. This would have significant consequences for our economy and the functioning of our society.
What is the campaign trying to achieve?
- To present the facts: labour immigration is essential for Finland’s economy and welfare services.
- To promote a constructive debate: The campaign supports a factual and objective debate on working life and immigration.
- Influences decision-making: the aim is to ensure that labour immigration is also taken into account in future labour and economic policies.
