Membership in the YTK is worthwhile
It is worth talking to employees about joining the unemployment fund at the beginning of their employment. Especially for young people and those who have moved to Finland from abroad, unemployment funds are often a foreign concept. Knowing about unemployment fund membership in good time can save your employees’ livelihoods in unexpected situations.
You cannot become a member of the unemployment fund when you are unemployed. That’s why it’s important to anticipate and join when you’re employed. There are conditions linked to the length of membership and employment for receiving the daily allowance. It is often too late to join when the end of work is in sight, so it is worth joining as early as possible. Talking about joining the fund is not a scare about the end of employment, it is a concern for the future of your employees.
The benefits of membership
- The earnings-related daily allowance paid by the Fund can be up to twice as much as the basic daily allowance paid by Kela.
- A member of the unemployment fund can apply for a mobility allowance if the new job is further away from home.
- The unemployment fund also pays out a transition security allowance to help unemployed people aged 55 and over to find work.
- When you are a member of YTK Worklife in addition to the YTK Fund, you will have free access to Eduhouse’s comprehensive online training library. Skills development for your employees is quick and easy with real-time distance learning, recordings and pre-defined learning paths.
- A member of YTK Worklife also has access to the Lakikaveri service, where they can get legal help if they need it, for example to go through their employment contract. This is also good for you: avoiding ambiguities and disputes when things are agreed in writing and as clearly as possible.

Here’s what to do to get your employee a YTK membership
You cannot become a member of the YTK Unemployment Fund or YTK Worklife on behalf of another person. So tell your employee about the opportunity and ask them to join themselves. When your employee receives their membership invoice from us, they can forward it to you for payment.

We provide workplaces with comprehensive information on what to do in the event of lay-offs or unemployment. These are useful events to organise, for example, in the context of change negotiations. The sessions are usually held remotely, for example in Teams, but where possible we can also come to your premises. Information can be provided in Finnish, Swedish or English.
